Description of the phenomenon

The staff of the institution works continuously, receiving and saving thousands of patients, performing complex operations, ensuring treatment, rehabilitation and returning defenders to life. Doctors, nurses, junior medical staff, rehabilitation specialists, administrative and support services act as a single team, which in wartime conditions ensures the continuous operation of a complex medical system. Each performs their mission, but the result is the joint preservation of people's lives and health.

This is not an individual heroic act, but the daily, many-year work of a large team, which even in the most difficult periods of the war did not allow assistance to stop for those who need it. It is this ability of the professional community to work, save and support the country in conditions of extraordinary challenges that is a manifestation of the Greatness of Ukraine - the power of people who work miracles every day not for the sake of recognition, but for the sake of life.

Today, the Military Medical Clinical Center of the Central Region in Vinnytsia is one of the most powerful medical hubs in Ukraine, where the lives of thousands of wounded defenders are saved. The military doctors of the center perform unique high-tech operations, remove unexploded ordnance and fragments directly from the bodies of patients and are the first in the country to introduce advanced methods of reconstructive surgery and prosthetics. They not only work under the constant threat of missile strikes on Vinnytsia, but also regularly travel to the front lines as part of mobile hospitals and evacuation teams to rescue fighters at ground zero. The concept of the “Flying Hospital” (aeromedical evacuation) with the participation of specialists from the Military Medical Clinical Center of the Central Region has become the highest stage of medical logistics of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, allowing the transport of critically wounded over long distances in a matter of hours.

The doctors of the center perform unique operations that have already entered the history of military medicine.

Removal of fragments from a working heart. The center's cardiac surgeons successfully performed a unique minimally invasive operation — they removed a metal fragment directly from the patient's myocardium. The intervention was performed using the method of lateral microthoracotomy on a working heart without stopping blood circulation and connecting an artificial device, which significantly accelerated the soldier's rehabilitation.

Saving a soldier after two clinical deaths. A team of doctors led by Igor Martsynkovsky and neurosurgeon Anatoly Gaystruk brought a 24-year-old defender with critical mine-explosive injuries to the head and limbs back to life. The soldier underwent more than 30 operations; the first dressings lasted 2 hours and were performed simultaneously by three teams of surgeons.

Unique operations on the front line. The chief surgeon of the VMCC of the Central Military District and the Medical Forces Command, Kostyantyn Gumenyuk, for the first time in Ukraine and the world, performed a laparoscopic nephrectomy (minimally invasive kidney removal through small punctures) directly in the front-line hospital in the Bakhmut area. This minimized trauma and allowed the military to recover faster.

Multidisciplinary facial reconstruction. Together with civilian colleagues and foreign specialists, the hospital's doctors restore complex defects in facial tissues and limbs. Using metal mesh and microsurgical flaps, they reshape the eye sockets and jaws of the wounded, saving them from amputations and severe disability.

During the tragic missile strike on Vinnytsia on July 14, 2022, despite the fact that the blast wave damaged the windows in some buildings of the military hospital itself, the staff reacted instantly. Within minutes, additional operating areas and reception points were set up in the center. The hospital received dozens of civilians with catastrophic mine-blast injuries, severed limbs, and severe thermal burns. Doctors, nurses, and anesthesiologists worked for more than a day without a break. The operating teams simultaneously rescued both wounded soldiers and injured children and adults, promptly coordinating logistics with other hospitals in the city. The staff collected and transfused blood, promptly connecting autonomous generators and special equipment.

To rescue the wounded from the combat zone, evacuation is carried out by specially converted aircraft (for example, the An-26 "Vita") and Mi-8 helicopters. The aircraft cabins are equipped as modern intensive care units: with ventilators, defibrillators, patient monitors, infusion pumps, and oxygen supply systems. In flight, the center's medical teams are able to support the vital functions of soldiers with critical multiple traumas, severe burns, and decompensated conditions directly while the plane is in the air. Since the main difficulty of air evacuation is the change in atmospheric pressure, the center's doctors have learned to delicately adjust the parameters of artificial lung ventilation and infusion therapy during the climb and descent of the aircraft.

Healthcare connection

The Military Medical Clinical Center of the Central Region is an example of how the healthcare system is able to maintain its effectiveness even in wartime. The Center's staff provides emergency, specialized and rehabilitation assistance to military personnel and civilians every day, saving lives and returning people to active life. Thanks to the continuous work of medical teams, the implementation of modern treatment methods and an interdisciplinary approach, not only the physical recovery of patients is ensured, but also their psychological and social adaptation. The Center's activities strengthen the resilience of the Ukrainian healthcare system and demonstrate its ability to respond to the most complex challenges of wartime.

Role of the team / collective / individual

The team of the Military Medical Clinical Center of the Central Region - doctors, nurses, rehabilitation specialists, junior medical personnel, military medics and auxiliary services workers combine their knowledge, experience and humanity every day to save others.

The results of this team's work are thousands of successful stories of saved lives, returned to health and restored human destinies. Each patient who, after a serious injury, returned to his family, service or civilian life is evidence of the strength and professionalism of the team.

Behind this phenomenon is not one person, but a holistic system of military medicine of Ukraine, built on the interaction of specialists from different fields, high standards of medical care and shared responsibility for the life of every defender and citizen. That is why the Military Medical Clinical Center of the Central Region has become an example of collective greatness, which is manifested daily through specific lives saved.
