On January 2, 2023, a wounded serviceman Vitaliy was delivered to a medical facility with a hematothorax. During the examination, in particular after performing a computed tomography scan, an extremely dangerous finding was discovered - there was a VOG-17 ammunition in the patient's body. This situation posed an immediate threat not only to the life of the wounded man himself, but also to the entire medical team that was supposed to provide assistance.

In an extremely short time, a set of actions was organized to carry out a rescue intervention: the leadership was notified, sappers were called, a separate operating room was prepared, preoperative training was organized, personnel access to the patient was limited, all manipulations were carried out taking into account the risk of ammunition detonation and using protective equipment. Despite the mortal danger, the medical team did not refuse to save the wounded man.

After the arrival of the explosives technician, the patient was taken to the operating room. During the surgical intervention, a thoracotomy was performed and VOG-17 was removed. Thanks to the professional, coordinated and courageous actions of the medical team, the patient's life was saved. This phenomenon is a manifestation of the Greatness of Ukraine, because it combines sacrifice, professional responsibility, team unity and unconditional loyalty to the principle: even in deadly conditions, human life remains the highest value.

This phenomenon is directly related to healthcare, since it involves providing highly specialized emergency medical care to a wounded person with a critically dangerous injury in a situation where the risk of death was extremely high for both the patient and the medical staff. In this case, the healthcare system showed itself as a space not only of clinical competence, but also of moral responsibility, the ability to act in conditions of extreme threat and save lives where any mistake could have fatal consequences.

This case also demonstrates the importance of team interaction between surgeons, anesthesia service, medical staff, explosives technicians and organizational leadership. It is such coordinated work that is a manifestation of the new quality of Ukrainian military medicine.

This medical team is the embodiment of the phenomenon of sacrificial service, because in conditions of a real threat of detonation of ammunition, they took responsibility for saving the life of a wounded serviceman. The team acted professionally, decisively and coherently: they organized a safe algorithm of assistance, provided pre-operative training, coordinated interaction with sappers, limited risks for personnel and performed surgical intervention, which ended with the successful removal of the VOG-17 and the rescue of the patient.
